Are you struggling to to tie together the elements of your documentary, giving you a film that is clumsy and inelegant?

You have shot your documentary or are planning to do so. You have sequences and scenes and interviews. You don't want something as obvious as a voiceover - you are a purist - but getting your documentary to work is a huge struggle.

You want it to be clear and elegant.
What if you come back from the shoot but your footage doesn't deliver precisely what you want? You don't want to tell people what to think, but you really don't want them to miss the point.

You dream of letting the material speak for itself, but it just isn't coming together.
Would you love the story, meaning, and themes to emerge naturally? Do your “no voice-over” edits leave you feeling like you haven’t achieved the creative vision you had for the documentary?

Are you desperate to be creative but feel you have to be on the nose?
If you wanted to use your own words, why do they feel so wordy? Where has the finesse and poetry of your language gone? Why does this feel like such an uncreative process taking something away from your documentary?

Do you come to the end of your documentary and have to tell the audience what the film is actually trying to say?
Are the words you've chosen clumsy? You know what you want to say with your documentary, but in the end, you resort to telling them what it is 'about'. (This is even a problem on some of the biggest documentaries out there).

Would you like your audience to experience your film as if there was no author at all?
Do you wish the edit process was one where you are constantly creative and having fun rather than feeling that you are rescuing your documentary?

Presenting Elegantly Connected: The DocFix Program to Build a Clear and Elegantly Told Documentary Story

The simple reason why commentary so often goes wrong is that directors often get caught up with writing words that tell their audience what to think.

On the other hand, you might be struggling to make your material work without any words at all, only to realise in the edit that you don’t have enough to piece it together effectively.

The step-by-step solution
The result is hugely sophisticated, but luckily getting there is a straighforward process of going through a series of steps that cover every possible way of integrating all the elements of your documentary story.

More than just words
There are so many techniques that the pros use to connect up the elements of your story, but they are done in a way that is invisible to the viewer. We will show you how it's done in the edit of some of the most significant documentaries in the world.

For any documentary
These techniques are the fundamental techniques used by all filmmakers. Whether art film, specialist factual, short film or industrial - these are the steps you have to consider.

The complete answer
If you miss out on any of these steps, you are losing the chance to tell your story at its best.

It's the cheapest part of the process.
When you become fluent in these techniques, you'll realise it's the most fun you can have - and the cheapest. All these techniques elevate your story when you can save yourself a fortune.
Commentary means far more than writing for a voice

It is a way of creating elegant connections between scenes and sequences. When you have the scaffolding to support your story, you can apply these techniques in a way that's invisible.

Understanding this process means you can build commentary using multiple creative approaches that help deliver exactly the meaningful story you want to - in the style that works perfectly for your documentary.

I love taking story courses, and I've been doing it for probably 15 years. There is absolutely nothing like this course out there anywhere. I've looked, I've looked everywhere, and I think that was, you know, the light bulb moment. When I saw this, I was like, this is amazing.

What's unique about this book?

I've been working on documentaries for over thirty years in every kind of format and genre.

Over this time, I've been in edits on my own films but also helping to create documentaries for others that have gone on to become some of the most successful on your screens.

They have included the hit series F1: Drive to Survive, where I was the Series Editor on the first series.

My job was to find a way of telling the stories in a unique and elegant way. I also worked on the storytelling and wrote the script for a natural history show voiced by Sir David Attenborough, produced and directed Emmy-nominated feature documentaries and much more.

The techniques I used in these edits are precisely what I reveal in the book. Some of them were developed by me and then refined over successive documentary projects. This is the only place where you can find all of them in one place.
I've not only helped Oscar and Emmy winners but have taught many first-time documentary makers how to solve their story problems. Everything here is applicable to whatever documentary you are making at any level.

The process by which I have done this has never been discussed before, except in this book. It's a process that I rely on.

The techniques outlined are fundamental to how all documentary stories must be told.

They stretch back to the work of the great director Alfred Hitchcock when he made silent movies, to the most up-to-date content that you are competing with.
